Central Section football standouts made their mark against some of the state's best Friday during the first Cal-State All-Star games -- in particular, Washington High's Notre Dame-bound duo of Deontay Greenberry and Tee Shepard.

Greenberry scored two touchdowns and Shepard came up with two interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown -- as the North pulled away from the South 54-34 in the Five-Star showcase game at Buchanan's Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Greenberry is a Cal-Hi Sports state Player of the Year candidate who helped lead Washington to the state Division III championship while setting California records with 2,165 yards receiving and 33 touchdowns, while Shepard attends Washington but sat out the season after being declared athletically ineligible following his transfer from Central.

Shepard helped the North overcome a 27-21 deficit with his first interception midway through the third quarter. The play set the stage for a 5-yard touchdown pass from Mike Baker (Central) to Greenberry.

A long run by Chris Brown (Memorial) on North's next possession set up its next score, a touchdown pass from Baker that made it 33-27.

The North, coached by Buchanan's Mike Vogt, extended the lead towent up 39-27 on a 25-yard interception return by Shepard, and Brown put the finishing touches on with 46-yard touchdown run with 1:18 remaining.

The Five-Star game was billed by event organizers as a North vs. South clash of the state's top 100 players as evaluated by Visalia-based youth football research and analysis firm Quick Twitch Sports.

Other Fresno-area athletes in the game included Buchanan's Zach Umfress, Memorial's David Keller, Clovis East's Sam Awrabi, Tulare's Xavier Stephens, Clovis West's Josh Lang and Edison's Vadal McDonald.

The Rising Stars game -- for the next-best 100 players in the state -- opened Friday's doubleheader, with North winning 28-24 behind two touchdown passes from Ridgeview's Tyler Ferguson.

Other Fresno-area players on the North included Buchanan's Nolan Sorensen and Chris Fowler, Central's Shakiem Barbell, Donald Speed, Matt Lea and Gary Robinson, Clovis' Wylie Brand and Nate Palomino, Clovis East's Khary Coleman, Clovis North's David Ford, Edison's Terell Green, Thomas Coronado and Robert Peele, Dinuba's Andrew Worthley, Hanford's Brayden Sanchez and Washington's Donald Phelps.
