Deontay Greenberry has made an oral commitment to Notre Dame, but the record-breaking receiver/defensive back from Washington High is expected to display his talents locally one more time before departing for South Bend, Ind.
Greenberry, who led the Panthers to the state Division III title last weekend, is among a host of Central Section players listed on the rosters for the first Cal-State All-Star football games, scheduled for Friday at Buchanan's Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Greenberry is set to play in the Five-Star Game, which event organizers describe as a North vs. South clash of the state's top 100 players as evaluated by Visalia-based youth football research and analysis firm Quick Twitch Sports. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Greenberry, a finalist for Cal-Hi Sports' state Player of the Year, fits that bill after a senior season that produced 2,165 yards receiving and 33 touchdowns (both state records) on 109 catches.
There are nine other Fresno-area players listed on the North roster for the Five-Star Game, which is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., including Central quarterback Mike Baker, Memorial running back Chris Brown, Buchanan receiver Zach Umfress, Memorial offensive lineman David Keller, Clovis East defensive lineman Sam Awrabi, Tulare linebacker Xavier Stephens, Clovis West linebacker Josh Lang, Edison defensive back Vadal McDonald and defensive back Tee Shepard, who attends Washington but was declared athletically ineligible after transferring from Central.
The Rising State game -- for the next-best 100 players in the state -- kicks off at 11 a.m. and features Fresno-area players in Buchanan quarterback Nolan Sorensen, Hanford receiver Brayden Sanchez, Dinuba receiver Andrew Worthley, Central receiver Shakiem Barbell, Washington running back Donald Phelps, Edison receiver Terell Green, Clovis offensive lineman Wylie Brand, Edison defensive lineman Thomas Coronado, Central defensive lineman Donald Speed, Clovis linebacker Nate Palomino, Clovis North linebacker David Ford, Buchanan linebacker Chris Fowler, Central defensive back Matt Lea, Edison defensive back Robert Peele, Central defensive back Gary Robinson and Clovis East defensive back Khary Coleman.
