The Fresno County Sheriff's Office early Saturday identified Eugenia "Gina" Valdez as the mother from San Joaquin whose 17-year-old son is accused of shooting a 91-year-old woman early on Thanksgiving morning.

Valdez, 35, is charged with being an accessory to a crime, child endangerment and solicitation of criminal acts. There were also outstanding bench warrants for Valdez for failing to send a child to school, deputies said.

Fresno County Jail logs Saturday showed she was still in custody, with bail totaling $33,000 on the various charges.

According to sheriff's deputies, the teenager confronted Marcella Miller, 91, and her 63-year-old daughter at their home on the 8600 block of 11th Street. Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said the boy entered the home with an intention to steal property.

Deputies said earlier that the suspect made some demands, then shot Marcella Miller in the face, Lopez said. Marilyn Miller, the daughter, was not injured.

Downtown Visalia crash injures 2 men

Two men sustained major injuries in an accident early Saturday in downtown Visalia in which police said alcohol was suspected to be a factor.

According to police, a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am was eastbound on Main Street at an unknown rate of speed when it struck a curb and spun out of control. It then broadsided a tree at the southeast corner of Main and Floral streets.

Both the driver and a passenger had major injuries and were transported to Kaweah Delta Medical Center for treatment.

One hurt in Clovis when car hits pole

One person was reported injured after a car rammed into a telephone pole late Saturday afternoon on Shepherd Avenue just east of Sunnyside Avenue in Clovis.

According to the California Highway Patrol's website, Clovis police closed Shepherd Avenue for a short time after the single-car accident.

The CHP said the accident was reported at 5:06 p.m. and there was a "moderate injury." The website also reported the possibility of lines and part of a pole being down from the crash.

6 arrested at Fresno DUI checkpoint

Six people were arrested Friday evening for allegedly driving under the influence at a sobriety checkpoint that Fresno police set up in the westbound lanes of Jensen Avenue at Cherry Avenue.

In addition to the six arrests, police said 27 vehicles were impounded for either the DUI arrests or for those driving without a valid license.

Man wanted in jewelry store theft

Fresno police are seeking a man after a robbery in Fig Garden Village Saturday evening.

Lt. Tom Rowe of the Fresno Police Department said the man entered Viva La Vault jewelry store about 5:30 p.m. and asked to see some rings. When the clerk put them on the counter, the man looked over his shoulder, grabbed the rings and fled, but he dropped most of the rings on his way out, Rowe said.

The suspect was described as a middle-aged man with spiky hair wearing a blue dress shirt, a black tie and black slacks. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fresno Police Department at (559) 621-7000.

Connector ramps at 41/180 to close

A construction project will close connector ramps from Highway 41 to Highway 180 beginning Monday evening, the California Department of Transportation said.

The connector ramps to northbound 41 from eastbound and westbound 180 will be closed from 10 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Hwy. 41 lanes to close for roadwork

A guardrail replacement project along Highway 41 will cause lane closures beginning Monday in Madera County, the California Department of Transportation said.
