A 32-year-old man and his 41-year-old girlfriend were arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly trying to steal a car in the Bally Total Fitness parking lot in the 5000 block of North Blackstone Avenue.

Fresno police charged the couple with burglary, possessing stolen property and giving false information to police, among other charges, and said the man was on the department's daily crime bulletin for another vehicle theft at a Gb3 gym in the Park Place shopping center at Palm and Nees avenues.

But as of Thursday afternoon, neither was listed in the Fresno County Jail log.

In the latest incident, police received reports of a car burglary in process at the Bally's gym. The department's Skywatch helicopter found the man in the parking lot and kept him in sight until police on the ground apprehended him.

An investigation found that the man arrived at Bally's in a stolen vehicle. Inside that vehicle was his girlfriend, as well as numerous other items from prior thefts, police said.

Porterville man loses leg in farm accident

A 31-year-old Porterville man severed one of his legs after he fell into an elevated auger used to move almonds, the Tulare County Sheriff's Department said.

According to the Tulare County Fire Department, medical personnel responded a little after 4 p.m. Tuesday to Tree House Almonds, at 2115 Road 144, and found the man with both his legs caught in the auger.

The man was extracted and transported by air ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

"There was only one person injured in the incident, and it appears it occurred because of miscommunication between the workers as to when the auger was turned off and then back on, and he fell into it," Sgt. Chris Douglass with the TCSD said.

Clovis man dies after rolling utility cart

An unidentified 53-year-old Clovis man was killed Wednesday when the utility cart he was driving rolled over on a hilly portion of his property.

The California Highway Patrol said the man was gathering wood in a gully near his residence when the accident happened. Due to the steep grade the man was attempting to drive on, the utility cart rolled over once and pinned him underneath.

He was pinned under the cart for an unknown amount of time before being found by a friend, who arrived at the man's home to begin Thanksgiving Day preparations.

Stolen goods found; 2 arrested in Goshen

Visalia police arrested two men Tuesday after searching a home in Goshen and finding property stolen from a Visalia auto wrecking shop.

Police went to Budget Auto Wrecking in Visalia at 9 a.m. Tuesday after property had been stolen two days in a row, Visalia Police Sgt. Candido Alvarez said.

One of the employees told officers that some of the stolen property might be found at a home on the 7000 block of Avenue 308 in Goshen. Visalia police and Tulare County Sheriff's deputies searched the home and found some of the property. The men were arrested and booked into Tulare County Main Jail on suspicion of possession of stolen property and conspiracy to commit grand theft, Alvarez said.

The investigation into the stolen property is on-going as investigators attempt to find additional suspects.

Water board adds Atwater resident

Atwater resident Carmen Ramirez was appointed to the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board by Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday.

Ramirez, 35, has been counsel in the Law Offices of Fagalde, Albertoni and Flores since 2010 and was an associate attorney from 2009 to 2010. Before that, Ramirez served as a redevelopment associate for the city of Merced Office of Economic Development from 2003 to 2007. She received her juris doctorate from the San Joaquin College of Law in Clovis.

Her appointment to the board will require Senate confirmation.

Visalia Holly Trolley extends service

The Visalia Towne Trolley will extend service to Mooney Boulevard today through Christmas Eve.

The Holly Trolley will allow shoppers to be driven to a number of Visalia's merchants and malls for free, making parking easier in the process, spokeswoman Jessica Blanchfield said. In total, the extended service allows for 40 stops.

The downtown Visalia route will continue on its current schedule, while the Mooney route will operate Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from today to Dec. 18. Service along Mooney Boulevard will run daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Dec. 19 to Dec. 24.
