THE BUZZ
Brayden Sanchez, nearing the close of one of the most accomplished careers in Hanford history, accounted for a total of 237 yards rushing and receiving -- averaging 12.5 yards a touch -- and scored six touchdowns as the Bullpups clinched at least a tie for their first West Yosemite League football title in 18 years with a 47-28 win over Mt. Whitney. Sanchez, who alternates between receiver and running back, also was named homecoming king on a night he increased his three-year touchdown total to 46 -- 25 receiving, 19 rushing, one punt return and one kickoff return. Hanford (7-2, 5-0), which has won five straight since losing nonleague games to Dinuba (20-16) and Madera (29-13), will be idle this week before ending the regular season at home Nov. 10 against Lemoore.
Presale tickets are flying for the state's small-school game of the week, matching Mendota at Firebaugh. Each school, 2-0 in the West Sierra League, received initial ticket allotments of 750. The game is expected to draw a standing-room-only crowd of 3,000 at Eagle Stadium.
While Bakersfield made a case for the No. 1 ranking with a 31-0, home-field rout of then-No. 5 Centennial, Clovis has been playing too well to deserve a demotion. The Cougars, since escaping 28-22 in overtime at Centennial Sept. 16, have beaten five teams by a combined score of 189-28. They'll close the regular season against ranked opposition in Clovis North and Clovis West. Bakersfield will finish against Stockdale, which won last week in running back D.J. Martin's return from academic ineligibility, and Liberty-Bakersfield. Playoff seeding for the section's six divisions will be determined Nov. 12 in the Porterville office of section commissioner Jim Crichlow.
