Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

When: Saturday

Where: Fresno State, Maple Avenue Mall

The central San Joaquin Valley's most popular footrace returns for its 13th year to raise money for breast cancer research and wrap up the 2011 Valley Runner of the Year Series.

The 5-kilometer runs are worth 10 series points, with the men's race getting under way at 7:30 a.m. and the women following at 8. Noncompetitive events and kids' races begin at 10:30.

Homegrown Cyclocross Series

When: Saturday and Sunday

Where: Woodward Park

The Valley's only cyclocross action continues with two events, beginning with the seventh annual "Lou Night Race" on Saturday night (lights required) and followed by another Series race Sunday morning.

Sign-ups for the "Lou" races begin at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with the first race at 6:20. Details: sickpromotions.net.

The Homegrown Series races begin at 10 a.m. Sunday. Details: ccorc.org.

News & notes

  • Representatives from BFGoodrich Tires presented members of the Four Wheel Drive Club of Fresno with a $4,000 grant last weekend in a ceremony at Whitebark Vista above Huntington Lake. The money will be used to pay for maintenance and conservation projects along the Dusy-Ershim OHV Trail, a 33-mile route in the Sierra National Forest.

  • Yosemite Conservancy naturalist Pete Devine will give insider tips on how best to enjoy Yosemite National Park during the winter during a free seminar at 6 p.m. Wednesday at REI in Fresno. Sign up at rei.com/fresno.

  • Flows on the San Joaquin River will remain at 350 cubic feet per second below Friant Dam until Nov. 5, when they will be reduced to the 100-130 cfs range due to maintenance at the Mendota Dam. The 350-cfs flows – ideal for paddling – will resume Jan. 16.
