Discrepancy in memories: Fresno State coach Pat Hill and Nevada running back Kendall Brock recount the recruiting history of the ex-Clovis West High star a tad differently.

As Hill recalls, Brock gave an oral commitment to Nevada during the summer before his senior year. And because of that early, non-binding commitment, Fresno State never tried to recruit Brock.

"I've known Kendall Brock since he was 5 years old," Hill said this week. "He's a great kid. He committed to Nevada the summer before his senior year, so we were never involved in his recruiting process."

Brock, The Bee's Player of the Year last season, said that during a sit down with the Bulldogs coaching staff, he was told he could walk on and play cornerback at Fresno State.

Hill said he was caught off-guard by Brock's comments.

"I never sat down with him and talked about a scholarship or anything," Hill said. "He made a commitment before our summer camp. I don't know what he's talking about. We didn't talk to him because he had already made his commitment."

Nonetheless, Nevada coach Chris Ault is happy to have Brock. The 5-foot-8, 190-pounder, considered a two-star recruit out of high school, already is contributing as a true freshman as a returner and running back, averaging 76.5 all-purpose yards in two games.

"We liked him from day one and felt he would fit in our pistol system," Ault said. "He was obviously one of the best players in that Valley last year. ... He's got a great future."

The Bulldogs currently have no players from the Reno/Tahoe area.

This date in Bulldogs history: Oct. 22, 1938, Fresno State coach and former star Nevada player Jimmy Bradshaw blanked his alma mater 27-0 in front of a crowd of 6,000 at Mackey Stadium in Reno to start the year 4-0, thanks to the play of a couple of future World War II military heroes. It was the Bulldogs' second consecutive shutout and they started with five straight victories in a 7-3 season. Bradshaw, who coached the Bulldogs from 1936-42 and in 1946, was 7-0 in his career against Nevada.
