THE BUZZ

For those caught up in records – as opposed to competition – please note: Frontier lost 21-17 to Liberty-Bakersfield, which is 5-1. And that's the same Liberty team that was rocked 35-7 on Sept. 16 by Clovis East, which is 1-5. That's why Liberty remains unranked and Frontier (3-2) is a suspect No. 15. The Titans are there only because of credibility earned in an OT loss – 21-20 to Ridgeview the previous week. Frontier's wins are against teams (South, El Diamante, West) with a combined 3-14 record.

Still-ranked Clovis West, conversely, is winless against teams with a combined 28-10 mark. And that includes one of NorCal's best (Del Oro-Loomis), one of SoCal's best (Crespi-Encino) and three of the Central Section's best in Edison, Bullard and Clovis North, which had to rally for a 42-35 win over the Golden Eagles on Friday. And this occurred two weeks after CW lost 35-32 to Bullard.

Edison quarterback Khari McGee's performance in a 52-50 come-from-behind win over Bullard has to go down as one of the finest in section history, especially given the opponent. The junior passed for 327 yards, three TDs and five conversions, and rushed for 125 yards and a score. His six-game totals: 84 of 139 (60.4%) passing for 1,352 yards and 14 touchdowns, and 454 yards rushing and five scores. Fortunately, he has former USC and NFL player Tim McDonald as a coach and recruiting mentor. And that promises to be a national chase.

The section's game of the week will send Central to Clovis on Thursday in the Tri-River Athletic Conference.

Clovis East coach Tim Murphy's availability for the Timberwolves' TRAC game Friday against Clovis North is in question after he left Monday for Pleasant Hill in the East Bay to be with his 71-year-old father, Al, who is hospitalized after an apparent stroke.
