Homegrown Cyclocross Series

When: Sunday

Where: Woodward Park

Central California's only cyclocross series returns for another year of heart-pumping action. Riders must negotiate dirt, sand, mud, grass and man-made barriers -- all in the same lap.

The racecourse sits in the park's southwest corner, just off the main entrance on Audubon Drive. Park in the Sunset View lot. Racing starts at 10 a.m. Details: ccorc.org.

Springville Fat Tire Classic

When: Sunday

Where: Rio Vista Street, Springville

This 13th annual mountain bike race, part of the Springville Apple Festival, is held on an 8-mile circuit course beside the scenic Tule River.

Awards will be handed out to the top three finishers in five categories. The action starts at 10 a.m. with late registration starting at 8 a.m. Details: springville.ca.us/applefest/.

News & notes

  • Fresno bass anglers Spencer Bush and Mark Corrente along with Hanford's Scott Douglas and Bill Kunz earned spots on the California Bass Federation State Team. The four men, along with nine other qualifiers, will represent California at next spring's Western Regional in Colorado.
  • Cyclists Lori Cherry and Ron Quitoriano of Fresno and Richard Hoff of Sanger were inducted into the Triple Crown Double Century Hall of Fame last month. Hoff has completed more than 100 double centuries, while Quitoriano and Cherry have each completed more than 50. Cherry also was recently inducted into the Furnace Creek 508 Hall of Fame.
  • Waterfowl hunting season begins Oct. 22 in the Balance of the State Zone, which includes Fresno, Madera and Merced counties. The season runs 100 consecutive days through Jan. 29. Details: dfg.ca.gov/hunting.
  • California's state fish, the golden trout, will not be listed as an endangered species, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced last week. The agency felt that recent conservation efforts throughout the fish's historic range have already done much to protect the species.
  • The National Park Service's Breaking Barriers collaborative, which aims to increase outdoors participation from under-represented groups, is hosting a public forum Oct. 25 at the Zimmerman Boys & Girls Club (540 N. Augusta St., Fresno). A meeting for youths is 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a community meeting from 6:30 to 8:30. Pizza and beverages will be provided.
