News & notes

  • Outdoor recreation in California's national forests contributed $2 billion to local economies in 2010 and helped sustain 38,000 jobs, according to the U.S. Forest Service's National Visitor Use Monitoring report. More than 30 million people visited national forests in California last year.

  • Sequoia National Forest officials have scheduled a public field trip Oct. 22 to assess restoration efforts at the Trail of 100 Giants near Camp Nelson. Last week, two giant sequoias fell side by side across the trail, which has been closed for public safety. The field trip starts at 10 a.m. Details: (559) 539-2607.

  • October is a big month for off-road bike riding. The Homegrown Cyclocross Series kicks off Oct. 16 at Woodward Park. Also on that day, Springville holds its annual Fat Tire Classic mountain bike race. Details: ccorc.org and springville.ca.us

  • Kaiser Pass Road remains open despite reports of snow Wednesday in the Huntington Lake area. The Vermilion Valley Resort at Edison Lake is scheduled to be open through Oct. 16, while Mono Hot Springs will be open until Nov. 1, weather permitting. Be aware that conditions can change at any time.

  • Non-hunting visitors to most state wildlife areas and refuges, including Los Banos and Mendota, can no longer buy day-use and annual passes on site. They must be purchased in advance online (dfg.ca.gov/licensing) or at one of 1,500 license agents or license sales offices.
