Experience one of California's most scenic bike rides, designed to promote the Sierra Vista National Scenic Byway.
Besides the 100-mile namesake ride, there's also a 63-mile metric century and the 24-mile Loop the Lake around Bass Lake. All rides begin at 7 a.m. at North Fork School (33087 Road 228, North Fork).

There's still time to make your mark on the 2011 Valley Runner of the Year Series. The 5-kilometer event, worth 10 points, is the penultimate race.
The 5K race begins at 7:45 a.m., preceded by a 1-mile event at 7:30.

- Volunteers removed three Dumpsters worth of trash from the San Joaquin River last weekend, which included 493 tires, an ATV, car parts and a refrigerator. Apparently, some folks still treat the river like a private trash dump.
- The Tuolumne Meadows campground in the Yosemite high country closed for the season Wednesday. Also, the nearby Tamarack Flat Campground is closed due to fire activity in the area. Yosemite Creek is open Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 8.
- Lottery applications for next summer's Yosemite High Camps are being accepted though Nov. 1 at yosemitepark.com. There is no fee to enter the lottery.
- The 28th annual Merced Gateway Triathlon is Sunday at the Merced College pool. Long- and short-course distances are offered, in addition to a kids' race. Details: onyourmarkevents.com.
- Nevada's state wildlife commission voted last week to establish a permanent bear-hunting season from Aug. 20 to Dec. 31.
