THE BUZZ
For all the advantages in enrollment (4,000) and talent, Central remains a fragile program three years after going 1-9 and a coaching change. This was reaffirmed in a 46-7 loss Saturday at Palos Verdes, which entered the game 0-2. The Grizzlies, then ranked second in the Central Section at 1-0, had no business playing a game that required the team to depart at 4:30 a.m. and bus 240 miles to the SoCal coast for a 3 p.m. kickoff. But school officials found themselves in a scheduling pinch after Chaparral-Temecula bailed out of a game at Central a year after it lost 27-12 at home to the Grizzlies as a state-ranked team. Central three-year starting quarterback Michael Baker attempted only 14 passes while throwing for a career-low 61 yards in the loss.
Amazing how the tiniest of infractions can have such a big impact. Consider Kingsburg's 20-16 loss at Washington: The Vikings, running the ball well behind Jake Rouch (107 yards), had positioned themselves for a victory after gaining a first down at the Washington 2-yard line with 1:22 remaining. But an illegal-procedure penalty moved the ball back to the 7 and, ultimately, Kingsburg fell short 3 inches of the goal line on a pass from Austin Bray to Kyler Christopher.
Three days of showdowns involving unbeatens this week: Thursday, Porterville at Tulare; Friday, Stockdale at Clovis, Clovis North at Frontier and Sunnyside at Washington; Saturday, Garces at Memorial.
Clovis North QB Christian Rossi is awaiting MRI results on a knee injured in the Broncos' 21-0 victory against Madera South.
Promotion in defeat: Centennial leaps five spots to No. 6 following double-OT loss to No. 1 Clovis.
D-VI Mendota has crushed D-V foes Fresno Christian (70-0), Caruthers (62-6) and Liberty-Madera Ranchos (48-7). Next for Aztecs: at 2010 D-V champ Fowler.
