Fresno Pacific made a bid for a return to the NAIA volleyball Top 25, rallying to upset No. 5 Point Loma Nazarene in a Golden State Athletic Conference showdown Saturday in San Diego.

All-American Martina Gregusova and Kathleen Anderson combined for 28 kills, 28 digs and 14 blocks as the Sunbirds (5-3, 2-0) won their fifth straight, 27-25, 17-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-11.

Anderson had 14 kills, 16 digs and nine blocks. In the final set, she had five kills and was in on three blocks. Gregusova, who had been hampered by a shoulder injury, had three kills and two blocks in the set to finish with 14 kills, 12 digs and five blocks.

McMinimy powers Monsters

Jeffrey McMinimy scored a hat trick and the Fresno Monsters beat New Mexico 4-3 at the North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minn.

McMinimy finished with 11 points in Fresno's 4-0 run at the tourney. New Mexico went 1-3.

Fresno Pacific women post shutout in women's soccer

Alyssa Mejia and Ashley Tallon scored to carry the Fresno Pacific women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory against William Jessup at Ramirez Field.

The Sunbirds (4-1) posted their second straight shutout. Catherine Michaelis and Sarah King combined to make six saves.

Mejia scored in the 35th minute on a breakaway. Tallon struck in the 71st minute on a blast.

Sunbirds men's soccer team falls 2-1 to CS San Marcos

Fresno Pacific had only two shots on goal in a 2-1 men's soccer loss to host Cal State San Marcos.

Gustavo Silva, with an assist from Paul Islas, tied it at 1-1 in the 78th minute for the Sunbirds (3-3). But the Cougars (5-3) answered a minute later on Alex Jaziri's unassisted blast off a loose ball.

Carvalho, Martinet continue winning ways in Las Vegas

Cledson Carvalho and Nathan Martinet stayed unbeaten for Fresno Pacific on Day 2 of the UNLV Fall Invitational and teamed for a second doubles victory.

Carvalho beat Johannes Markel of UNLV 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-5), Martinet outlasted UNLV's Rene Ruegamer 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) and Xavier Smith swept UNLV's Alex Bull 6-1, 6-3. Carvalho and Martinet downed UNLV's Bernard Schoeman and Bull 8-6.

The event concludes today.

Rangel earns MVP as Rams wrestlers win in Sacramento

Conrad Rangel was named MVP while taking the 149-pound division to lead Fresno City College's wrestling team to the Sacramento City tournament title.

The Rams scored 128 points, with the hosts next with 92. Other champs for Fresno City were Junior Davila, 125; Chris Padilla, 133; Brady Bersano, 157; Martin Fabbian, 174; and Fito Juarez, 184.

Michael Ruiz (113) and Eric Orozco (141) of West Hills-Lemoore went 3-0 at the Mt. San Antonio Tournament, but the Eagles lost to Cerittos 21-15, Mt. SAC 22-18 and Palomar 22-12.

Sunbirds runners place

Kevin Barnard placed sixth and Brandon Croft seventh to help the Fresno Pacific men's cross country team finish second out of 11 schools at the Mills College Invitational in Oakland.

Barnard ran the 8K course in 27 minutes, 31 seconds and Croft came in at 27:53.

Fresno Pacific's women were seventh out of 12 teams. Megan Barnard's 19th-place finish (25:39) in the 6K led the Sunbirds.

FCC's Marquez captures first at Beaver Invitational

Fresno City's Erica Marquez won the women's race and the Rams men placed second at American River's Beaver Invitational.

Marquez ran the 3.04-mile course in 19:50. Sandra Navarro was third in 20:12, but the Rams didn't have enough runners to score in the team standings.

Josh Webb and Angel Flores finished fifth and seventh for the Rams men. Webb ran 21:09 on the 4.04-mile course and Flores 21:19.

American River had the top four men's runners, with Wyatt Landrum's 20:29 the top time.

FPU water polo streak snapped in close losses

Fresno Pacific's two-game water polo winning streak came to an end with losses to MIT and Chapman at the Posada Royale Invitational in Thousand Oaks.

MIT, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, beat the Sunbirds (2-8) 8-5 and No. 11 Chapman won 13-11.

Stephen Chafi led the Sunbirds with four goals on the day. Jake Finney made 13 saves.

Meyers sets track record, increases Outlaws lead

Jason Meyers of Clovis finished eighth in the World of Outlaws feature Friday at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa.

The defending Outlaws champ set a track record of 13.074 seconds on the three-eighths-mile clay course in qualifying. He then crashed in the dash, started 24th in the main and with his finish won the Hard Charger Award.

Meyers increased his series-leading margin to 106 points over Steve Kinser, who placed 11th.

Szpor tosses 2 TDs in defeat

Reedley's Will Szpor passed for 270 yards and two touchdowns, but he and his Malone University teammates fell 24-22 to visiting Saint Ambrose on a field goal with 5 seconds to play in an NCAA Division II game in Canton, Ohio.

The Pioneers were off to their first 2-0 start since 2002.
