THE BUZZ
It's obvious now that Clovis West coach Mike Parsons wasn't sandbagging when he questioned his team's No. 14 state preseason ranking by Cal-Hi Sports. The 0-2 Golden Eagles, coming off a 12-1 and Central Section Division I championship, suited up only 27 players in a 52-18 loss at Del Oro-Loomis. "A lot of injuries and there are some things going on," athletic director Joe Aiello said without elaborating. Having plunged from No. 2 to No. 15 in The Bee's rankings in two weeks, more trouble looms with Saturday's home game against state 11th-ranked Crespi-Encino, which has blasted Dominguez-Compton 48-6 and Jordan-Los Angeles 64-0.
Section commissioner Jim Crichlow says he and staff are reviewing video of Friday's Wasco-Corcoran game that was stopped toward the end of the first half because of a brawl with Wasco leading 34-12. He said all players who left the bench to join the fight – "and there are numerous" – will, by CIF rule, automatically be prohibited from playing in their team's next game.
Edison coach Tim McDonald says standout sophomore running back Kevin Nutt, who broke his left wrist in a 33-14 loss to Bakersfield, will be lost for the season. He'll be replaced by juniors Montrail Love and Dondre Howard, who is only 5-6 and 140 pounds but is also an outstanding baseball pitcher and one of the section's best athletes.
A new state CIF rule calls for automatic running clock upon a 35-point lead in the fourth quarter. Such was the case for all of the final quarter in Tulare's 81-14 win at Golden West; Redskins quarterback Oscar Reyes (395 passing yards, six TDs) and receivers Alex Espinoza (173 yards, three TDs) and Williams Stallworth (144 yards, three TDs; punt return TD) did all their damage in the first half.
