Race for the River

When: 10 a.m. Saturday

Where: Lost Lake Park, Friant

Help celebrate the revived San Joaquin River by racing your kayak or canoe 8.5 miles from Lost Lake Park to Fort Washington Beach. Flows are expected to be around 350 cubic feet per second -- perfect for boating. There are separate races for competitive and recreational paddlers.

Fees are $40 for adults or $30 for students younger than 18 and include shuttle service from 7 to 11 a.m. Register in advance at sanjoaquinriver.sportical.com/events/638 or Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. Details: sanjoaquinriver.org.

  • Archery season ends Sunday in California deer zone D7 (San Joaquin River drainage) before the general rifle season begins Sept. 17 and ends Oct. 30. The general deer season in zone D8 (Kings River) opens Sept. 24 and ends Oct. 23. Details: (559) 243-4005.

  • Kokanee Power is hosting its annual team tournament at Shaver Lake on Saturday at Camp Edison. The event is open to all anglers and will be the last fishing tournament at Shaver before the lake gets drained to streambed levels this fall. Details: kokaneepower.org.

  • Take a guided 2-mile hike on the Musick Meadows Loop Trail with the Shaver Lake Volunteers on Saturday. Meet at Camp Edison forestry office at 9 a.m. Details: shaverlakevolunteers.org or (559) 841-3194.

  • Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park is open to visitor use from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m daily. After Nov. 1, the hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • The third annual Tour de Fresno charity bike ride returns Sept. 17. Four distances are offered ranging from a 15-mile scenic ride to a 100-mile century that passes Pine Flat Lake, Sanger and Fowler before finishing in downtown Fresno. Details: tourdefresno.com.
