THE BUZZ
The section's game of the week will match Bakersfield and Edison on Friday night at Sunnyside. Both stamped themselves as Central Section Division I contenders last weekend as the Drillers routed Utah power Timpview-Provo 38-13 and the Tigers schooled Clovis East 21-0.
An intersectional showdown that will draw state interest will match Bullard and tailback Demetrius Warren against Valley Christian-San Jose and nationally ranked running back Byron Marshall on Saturday night at McLane.
A torn knee cartilage in the summer at Fresno State's camp has interrupted the progress of Clovis West linebacker Josh Lang. He had been expected to be one of the section's best at his position after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament tear in the same knee in spring 2010 that prohibited him from playing for the Golden Eagles' Division I championship team last fall. Lang is playing now, but not at top form, says coach Mike Parsons: "It's a mental thing." In addition, Clovis West receiver Ryan Clark is doubtful for Friday's game at Sac-Joaquin Section power Del Oro-Loomis after suffering a mild concussion in the Eagles' 31-30 double-overtime loss at Merced. Clark, also a shortstop who will attend UC Santa Barbara on a baseball scholarship, hasn't played football since his freshman year. Parsons, citing his work ethic and precise routes, considers him a "great addition."
That same Merced team that beat Clovis West was shelled 42-0 by Central in a scrimmage two weeks earlier. Say what you wish about scrimmages but they're often true indicators, which bodes well for the Grizzlies, who jumped two spots this week after opening the regular season with a 37-10 romp at Paso Robles behind Michael Baker's 266 yards passing and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 80 and a score. Central is idle this week.
