J.J. Dukes deli finds a new home in Fresno

August 21, 2011

A new J.J. Dukes Deli and Catering has opened near Cedar and Shields avenues in Fresno.

Some might recognize the name from the couple's existing catering business and the J.J. Dukes deli they once owned in Reedley.

Justin and Jamie Dukes sold the Reedley location, now called the Reedley Sandwich shop, to friends earlier this year to focus on catering jobs that took them into the north valley.

But they had always planned to open another deli. The Fresno location opened in July.

It's open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The deli delivers, and sells soups, salads and "big hearty meat sandwiches," Justin Dukes said.

They also use the deli's kitchen for catering jobs.

Those events range from a barbecue for 4,000 people to baby showers.

The Dukes also sell concession food at racetracks in Madera and Chowchilla on the weekends.

A new 'I do' venue

The new owner of Grand Occasions is planning changes for the Fresno banquet hall.

The business, at 4584 W. Jacquelyn Ave. in Fresno, near Shaw Avenue and Highway 99, was owned by local restaurateur John Pardini. Ventura-based Wedgewood Wedding & Banquet Centers, which has 13 other locations in California, bought the location in July.

It has been renamed the Wedgewood Wedding & Banquet Center.

The company (www.wedge woodbanquet.com) is planning to build a garden area designed for wedding ceremonies. It will be surrounded by trees and will include a water fountain and a raised area for couples to say their vows, said president Bill Zaruka.

The three banquet rooms will be updated with new paint, carpet, lighting and audio-visual systems.
