  Home Depot expects to hire more than 400 people at its stores in the central San Joaquin Valley to gear up for spring, the company's peak selling season. It's part of a nationwide hiring spree in which Home Depot plans to fill 80,000 temporary positions -- 10,000 more than 2012.

  In response to letter writers Raymond F. Ensher and David Paul Davenport's desire for Fresno to have a local history museum, the Fresno Historical Society recognizes that sharing the story of the Central Valley through a history museum would contribute significantly to developing a strong sense of identity as a region as well as a heightened pride in our community.

  Founded in 1919, the Fresno Historical Society collects, preserves and interprets the history of Fresno County and the Central Valley through educational programs and exhibits, collections, publications and preservation of the community's historic and cultural resources. For many years, there have been suggestions regarding what type of museum Fresno needs and wants. Any of these might be achieved, but the considerable funds needed to operate and maintain a regional museum designed to house, preserve and exhibit the Society's extensive collections must be considered.

  The current Historical Society Board of Trustees and staff continue to develop

  Fresno police have arrested a woman wanted in connection with the theft of $10,000 and two passports from Chinese tourists at a southeast Fresno grocery store on Jan. 31.

  For many years, I have been writing to The Bee and was profiled in The Bee. My periodic writings have been in response to social ills, political injustices and corrections to the historically incorrect articles. This I based on my civic duty only.

  With the recent change of the editorial page editor, I no longer see the multi-leveled concerns voiced by The Bee readers. Fresno does not deserve to slip back into provincialism by constriction but be a member of the global society.

  Meux Home guided tours

  We would like to invite the public to visit the Meux Home Museum and experience a guided tour during which they can learn about early Fresno history, about Dr. Meux and his family, and about our city's historic 1888 Queen Anne Victorian home.

  This 125-year-old home still stands proudly, welcoming all to enjoy its authentic architecture, its interesting family stories and its beautiful antiques and artifacts.
