Buchanan High's Seth Moranda, a three-year fixture in Central Section baseball with his senior season still remaining, will sign with Fresno State on Wednesday in a twist of fate that created some Bulldogs good fortune.
The pitcher/shortstop had made a nonbinding oral commitment to Cal State Fullerton a year ago. But he said Monday that Titans coach Dave Serrano pulled the scholarship offer off the table two weeks ago.
"He said they over- recruited and had to cut, and I was one of them," said Moranda, a two-time Bee All-Star who led Buchanan to the section's Division I title and No. 8 national ranking last season by going 8-3 as a pitcher and hitting .371.
He's won 21 career games as a pitcher, but is being recruited to Fresno State primarily as a shortstop.
"I think this will be a better place for me," he said, "and I will get to play at home in front of family and friends."
