Buchanan, ranked No. 5 in The Bee's preseason Top 20, opened the football season Friday night by routing former Tri-River Athletic Conference rival Madera 53-14.
The visiting Bears zipped to a 22-0 lead and rolled over the Coyotes, who have moved to the County-Metro Athletic Conference.
Seth Moranda completed 17 of 27 passes for 212 yards and four touchdowns to pace Buchanan. He also rushed eight times for 49 yards.
Austin Kemp was his favorite receiving target with four catches for 94 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown. Eight others caught passes for the Bears.
Buchanan also scored twice on special teams -- a 56-yard punt return by Brett Johnson to open the scoring and Kenny Castle's 93-yard kickoff return.

Two quick turnovers in the third quarter led to 10 points as the host Cougars put the game out of reach.
Clovis defensive lineman Ryan Davies recovered a botched handoff deep in Golden Valley territory, and on the next play receiver Johnny Vietty threw a 27-yard option pass to a wide-open Bobby Grijalva for a touchdown to extend Clovis' lead to 21-6 with 7:42 left in the third quarter.
A fumble on GV's next possession set up a 35-yard field goal by Anthony Arcelus that gave Clovis a 24-6 lead with 3:25 left.
GV got within 24-12 but Clovis put the game away with a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped by Isaac Burton's 23-yard touchdown run for his second score of the game.
Clovis had 403 yards of total offense. Sophomore running back Yoon Conner rushed for 108, including a 66-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Host Porterville High built a 31-7 halftime lead on the strength of two touchdowns apiece by David Ali and Michael Forrester to beat visiting Mt. Whitney 48-14 on Friday night.
