They're qualified because: The section's individual tournament doubles champions blended size, athletic ability and competitive fire, linking as a Bee Player of the Year in volleyball (Mandelbaum) and another in basketball (Orlich). Yet they were matched only late in the season, going 11-0 after Orlich's normal doubles partner quit and Mandelbaum was deemed better fit for doubles because of limited singles mobility following a volleyball injury.
He said it: "They were such competitive, winning kids, there was no doubt their sheer competitiveness took over. At first both used to throwing their teams on their backs they both tried to get to everything. But once they learned to balance and trust each other, that's when they really took off."
