Alex Tavlian, a senior at Clovis West High School and president of the school's Armenian Club, will attend the 95th anniversary commemoration of the Armenian genocide in New York on Sunday.

He is one of three winners of a national essay contest sponsored by the Knights & Daughters of Vartan and Facing History and Ourselves, and will be recognized at the event.

Tavlian said he wrote his essay on the importance of recognizing the Armenian genocide. "I discussed how most nations will not intervene in international struggles. Usually it has to do with other interests like oil and economic gain."

He said he is excited to learn what scholars have to say about the annihilation.
