Vitals: Sanger, senior, 112

Need to know: Saved his best season for last, going 42-6 and capturing the first state medal of his four-year varsity career.

Diaz had the misfortune of being in the same weight class as defending California champion Alex Cisneros of Selma, who beat Diaz 5-0 in the state final one week after topping him 5-2 for the Masters championship.

Diaz won titles at the Chukchansi, Redwood, County/Metro Athletic Conference and Yosemite Divisional tournaments.

He was fourth at the Reno Tournament of Champions, second at El Cajon and second at the California Invitational Tournament.

He said it: “After he made the finals at [divisionals], that lit him up and he decided he wanted to be a state placer. It gave him confidence. He did a great job getting there. Taking second was a great accomplishment for him.” — Sanger coach Robert Juarez said.
