Vitals: Redwood, senior, defender

Need to know: Was used as a rover along the backline for a defensive-minded Rangers team that won the Central Section Division II championships.

Sanchez was one of three named West Yosemite League Defensive Player of the Year.

The two-year starter also scored six goals this season.

He said it: “Our team success was based on defense, and Jose was the anchor of that unit. As Jose went, so did the defense. He plays with a lot of confidence. He doesn’t hesitate to play the balls in the back and he’s quick to recover and cover spaces. And once he had helped us regain possession of the ball, he was quick to join in the attack.” — Redwood coach Miguel Balderas
