Vitals: Central Valley Christian
Need to know: Has directed the Cavaliers to a 99-18-2 record with four league titles, three Central Section titles and two trips to the CIF Southern California Regional playoff semifinals during four seasons with his alma mater. CVC went 23-5 this season.
Up next: De Groot plans to return for a fifth season as the Cavaliers coach.
A dairy farmer by day, Jacob De Groot has no intention of giving up his three-month-a-year side gig any time soon.
And its hard to blame him considering the success hes enjoyed coaching the Central Valley Christian High girls soccer team.
De Groot coached his third Central Section championship team in four seasons with his alma mater, leading the Cavaliers into the semifinals of the CIF Southern California Regional Division III playoffs for the second time. De Groot has been selected The Bees Girls Soccer All-Stars Coach of the Year.
I get asked every year: Are you going to keep going? said De Groot, who has spent eight years overall coaching or assisting in the Cavaliers girls soccer program. And I say: Of course. Im having too much fun to stop.
It was a love of the game and a desire to get back involved in soccer three years after his playing career ended at CVC that led De Groot to accept an offer to coach the junior varsity team in 2002. De Groot eventually took over the varsity team in 2006 after it had won three straight section titles.
Four years later, De Groot is part coach, part caretaker.
I just try to maintain the consistency, said De Groot, whose teams are 99-18-2 with four league titles during his tenure. Its gotten to the point where weve made a tradition of being successful. And its brought attention to the program. Everyone who gets involved knows this is where the bar is set. Its a big commitment from the kids. They spend a lot of time at it.
After having the schools streak of five straight section titles snapped in 2009 by Selma, CVC entered this past season with a trio of four-year players in Lizzy Vannette, Rebekah Gonzales and Brianna Westly along with three freshmen and three sophomore starters.
De Groot worried his squad might be too young to be competitive, but the Cavaliers responded by going 23-5 and beating Exeter 5-0 for the section Division IV title.
Hes really passionate about soccer, Vannette said. Its fun to have a coach who is as into it as you are. He has a lot of energy and he brings that to the team. You can tell he loves being out there. Just seeing that makes us want to do a good job for him.
Its players such as Vannette, the Central Sequoia League MVP, who have helped CVC maintain its success. She followed in the footsteps of her older sister, Abbey, and set the standard for younger sister, sophomore Emily, to continue.
From the time these kids are 10-years-old, theyve been watching the program and it gives them something to work for, De Groot said. They are excited three years before they get to high school to play for CVC. It motivates these kids to work hard.
