As the Central Section Division I boys soccer champion, Stockdale High is in.

The winner of today's D-I girls soccer final between second-seeded Stockdale and top-seeded host Buchanan is in, too. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

But after that, the section's remaining entrants into the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs will have to be decided on paper.

The Central Section receives one automatic berth for its boys and girls teams into each of the three Regional divisions, which are determined by enrollment figures from the 2008-09 school year.

On the boys side, section champions Redwood, Dinuba and Shafter are in the running for a berth in D-II. Farmersville and Mission Prep are vying in D-III.

The girls side is even more convoluted with five section champions -- Garces, Clovis North, Central Valley Christian, Liberty-Madera Ranchos and Strathmore -- all falling into D-III for schools with enrollments of 999 and fewer.

But, because of a 15% spike in attendance from last year with the addition of its first junior class, second-year Clovis North has been reclassified as D-II for the regional playoffs. Also, schools were given the option of moving up a division, which Central Valley Christian has volunteered to do.

That means all the automatic bids in D-II and D-III will be decided by section commissioner Jim Crichlow using the seven points of seeding criteria in the CIF bylaws, which are: head-to-head outcome, strength-of-schedule, overall record, record vs. common opponents, place in common tournaments, record vs. playoff teams in the same division and league placement (if teams are from the same league.)

Crichlow said he plans to notify schools receiving automatic berths Thursday. The SoCal Regional seeding meeting is Sunday, with an at-large berth available to one team from either the Central, Los Angeles or San Diego sections.

Baseball in full swing

The Coca-Cola Baseball Classic and Central Baseball Classic will open today with large fields and several teams that dominated section play last year.

The two-week, seven-day Coca-Cola Classic, hosted by Clovis, will feature defending Tri-River Athletic Conference champion Buchanan, D-I runner-up Clovis West, defending County/Metro Athletic Conference titlist Bullard, reigning D-II king Edison and D-II semifinalist El Diamante.

Today's top games in the 14-team field will match Buchanan and Bullard at 3 p.m. at Clovis, and the state's eighth-ranked Clovis West hosting Beyer-Modesto at 4 p.m.

The 18-team Central tournament has attracted defending section champions in Hanford (D-III) and Liberty-Madera Ranchos (D-V), and section runners-up in Memorial (D-II), Madera South (D-III) and Selma (D-IV).
