A boomerang transfer that has returned Melissa Sweat to Stockdale High could greatly influence the Central Section Division I girls basketball playoffs.

Sweat, a San Diego State signee who led the Mustangs to an upset win over Clovis West for last year's D-I title, had transferred this school year to Liberty-Madera Ranchos, where she played her last game Jan. 7 -- delivering 21 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals in a 72-23 nonleague victory over Tranquillity.

Both moves -- to Liberty and back -- involved job-related circumstances with her father, according to Liberty athletic director Mike Mazzoni.

She now wants to resume playing for Stockdale, but her eligibility is pending, according to section commissioner Jim Crichlow.

A full family move would allow her to play immediately, but there's a catch: Mazzoni hasn't signed off on the transfer because, he says, while Sweat, a sister and her father have moved back to Bakersfield, two younger siblings are still attending elementary school in the Liberty district while living with their mother.

"I'm not going to sign off on it unless it's a legal transfer," Mazzoni said, "and with two siblings still enrolled in our district, I can't understand how it can be a full family move."

Crichlow, however, indicated Sweat is about to get the green light, given a bit more family documentation regarding housing.

Stockdale hasn't been hurting without her. The Mustangs are ranked fourth in the section at 20-3 and lead the Southwest Yosemite League with a 7-0 record.

Last March, in the D-I championship at Selland Arena, Sweat provided 24 points and 12 rebounds as second-seeded Stockdale defeated No. 1 Clovis West 70-60.
