Asia Adell's golf story begins 12 years and 2,200 miles ago.
She's 5 and observing dad, Alvin, from their home in Montgomery, Ala.
"He's chipping balls in the backyard," she recalls. "And I'm mesmerized."
Not by Cinderella or the Little Mermaid, not the Disney classics.
By dad chipping golf balls.
"I'm watching," Asia says, "and my ultimate goal is to hit the ball over the fence, across the barrier and into the neighbor's yard. If I did that, I arrived."
She did long ago.
The Clovis West High senior is The Bee's Player of the Year after completing an extraordinary prep career by playing the lead role on the most accomplished team show in Central Section history.
She averaged 74.6 strokes for 18 holes, including a team-leading 4-over 76 as the Golden Eagles captured a fourth straight section title with a 15-stroke runaway from Frontier at the Tulare Golf Course. She also led section representation in the Southern California Regional with a 2-over 74 on the challenging SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta.
As a four-time All-Tri-River Athletic Conference player, Adell has been a fixture in the section dynasty. This year, the Eagles blew away every major record in the section, including a 378 in the North Area tournament at Madera Municipal when she shot a 3-under 69.
"She's very competitive, very diligent and hard working," Golden Eagles coach Ken Shipley says. "And, as far as golf itself, she has a lot of shots, power and great work ethic. She just has really refined her skills."
Those skills landed her a scholarship at Cal Poly of the Big West Conference.
"My ultimate goal," she says, "is to play pro golf. But my immediate goal is to win the Big West and become the No. 1 women's golfer in the NCAA."
