The Air Force says the commander of U.S. Strategic Command is retiring.
In a news release Thursday, Gen. Kevin Chilton said that after 34 years of service, "it's time to close this chapter of my career."
The Air Force says President Barack Obama has nominated Air Force Gen. C. Robert "Bob" Kehler (KAY-luhr) to replace Chilton at Strategic Command, which is based at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.

Airgas Inc. board members have unanimously rejected a sweetened $5.5 billion buyout offer from rival Air Products and Chemicals Inc.
Airgas said Wednesday the offer of $65.50 per share still grossly undervalues the company and is only a $2 hike from Air Products' previous offer.
The company also advised its shareholders to reject some director candidates and bylaw amendment proposals from Air Products at the Airgas annual meeting Sept. 15.

A spike in airborne particulates following Fourth of July fireworks in the central San Joaquin Valley is helping degrade air quality, and the effects are likely to linger through the week, officials say.
Jaime Holt of the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District said air quality typically suffers in summer months as hot weather trapped in the region produces more ozone and pollutants.
But as many in the Valley set off fireworks Sunday evening, district officials noticed that the air quality began to worsen.

Warm air trapped in the central San Joaquin Valley will heat up today, raising the high temperature in the Fresno area to 103 degrees this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
Because of the hot weather, the city of Fresno will open cooling centers today from noon to 8 p.m. at these locations:

As the front-page picture on Dec. 15 showed, the High Sierra stood out in sharp relief in the clear air after the rain. I was pleased to read in another publication that the proposed aggregate mine on Jesse Morrow Mountain, with the blasting, hauling and crushing, will actually reduce air pollution and presumably gift us with many more such beautiful views.
