The chaser: Royal-Simi Valley

Central Section champion: Buchanan

Watch him: Ammar Moussa, Arcadia

The skinny: Familiar song here involving national powers Dana Hills and Royal, which have won four of past five state D-I titles. Two-year reigning champion Dana Hills is coming off six-point win over Royal for Southern Section D-I championship. Royal is top-ranked nationally in a couple of polls. Buchanan, second a year ago, is ranked fifth in state's D-I by DyeStatCal.

DIVISION II

Defending champion: Loyola-Los Angeles

Favorite: Mountain View

The chaser: Glendora

Central Section champion: Redwood

Watch him: Elias Gedyon, Loyola

The skinny: Mountain View, third a year ago, is the prohibitive favorite after toasting Crystal Springs course in Central Coast-record 76:35 two weeks ago.

DIVISION III

Defending champion: Barstow

Favorite: Palos Verdes-Palos Verdes Estates

The chaser: St. John Bosco-Bellflower

Central Section champion: Madera South

Watch him: Erik Olson, Novato

The skinny: Southern Section show with St. John Bosco and Palos Verdes.

Central Section champion: McFarland

Watch him: Dan Milechman, Tamalpais-Mill Valley

The skinny: McFarland, carrying high the section banner, seeks state meet-record 10th title, but Laguna Beach will have a say.

Watch him: Wesley Devoll, Pasadena Poly

GIRLS

DIVISION I

The chaser: Torrey Pines-San Diego

Central Section champion: Buchanan

Watch her: Molly Grabill, Rancho Bernardo

The skinny: More Southern Section heat here with Great Oak, but Torrey Pines and section record-holder Buchanan will post high fives.

Defending champion: Saugus-Santa Clarita

Favorite: Saugus

The chaser: Mira Costa-Manhattan Beach

Central Section champion: Tulare

Watch her: Kaylin Mahoney, Saugus

The skinny: Race of the day matches nationally No. 2-ranked Saugus, the three-time defending champion, against Southern Section rival Mira Costa.

DIVISION III

Defending champion: Corona del Mar-Newport Beach

Favorite: Orange Lutheran

The chaser: Corona del Mar

Central Section champion: Clovis North

Watch her: Rebecca Mehra, Palos Verdes

The skinny: Had enough of SoCal firepower? Sorry, it's Orange Lutheran and Corona del Mar.

Defending champion: La Reina-Thousand Oaks

Favorite: Coronado

The chaser: Harvard Westlake-North Hollywood

Central Section champion: McFarland

Watch her: Catherine Hasbrouck, Nordhoff

The skinny: Coronado, led by Sallie Privett and Annie Lovering, scores one for the San Diego Section.

Defending champion: Chadwick-Palos Verdes Estates

Favorite: San Francisco University

Central Section champion: Mission Prep

Watch her: Lucy McCullough, Marin Academy-San Rafael

The skinny: Promising state balance, matching San Francisco University and College Prep of the North Coast Section against Chadwick of the Southern Section.
