Local briefs: Sunbirds' men get another hoops win

NAIA third-ranked Fresno Pacific kept its record clean with an 80-71 win against Montana Tech in a nonconference men's basketball game Friday at the Special Events Center.

Todd Brown led all scorers with 28 points, and the Sunbirds (6-0) shot 51% to equal their season average.

James Lewis chipped in 15 points and Alex Davenport 10.

Fresno Pacific led by seven at the break and shot 57% in the second half to hold off the Diggers (4-6), who lost 93-52 at Azusa Pacific on Wednesday.

Montana Tech came within five points in the final minute, but Adrian Hurtado, Lewis and Brown made two free throws apiece to put it away.

Porterville, new coach beat Fresno City's men

T.J. Jennings' first victory as Porterville College coach couldn't be bigger.

Harold Reed scored 20 points and Oscar Velasquez 18 as the Pirates knocked off perennial state power Fresno City 82-78 at the four-team Bakersfield tournament.

The Rams (4-3) were led by Edward Willis' 18 points, and Percy Lemle had 11.

Porterville (1-4) beat the Rams for the first time since 2001 and will play Bakersfield or Allan Hancock at 5 p.m. today for the championship. Fresno City is in the 3 p.m. third-place game.

Stanford honors ex-local LPGA player Scrivner

Former LPGA player Kathleen Scrivner of Fresno was inducted into Stanford's Hall of Fame this month.

Scrivner, a three-time All-American, is the fourth women's golfer selected to the Hall, joining Shelly Hamlin, Anne Quast-Sander and Mickey Wright.

Scrivner, whose maiden name is McCarthy, starred at Memorial High on the boys team. She reached the finals of the 1986 U.S. Women's Amateur and played on two Curtis Cup teams.
