Retired instructors, alumni and a former campus president top the first list of honorees for Fresno City College's centennial celebration.

Wednesday, officials announced the first of 100 people to be recognized during the college's 100th anniversary. Cynthia Azari, president of City College, said the choices reflect "people who have really had an impact on our community."

They are:

-- Larry Fortune, an alumnus, community leader and president of Fortune Associates, a commercial real estate brokerage firm.

-- Odell Johnson, member of the college's championship basketball teams in the mid-1950s and a former president of Laney College in Oakland.

-- Don Larson, who taught on campus for 35 years and is often quoted in the media as a political expert.

-- Clyde McCully, the longest-serving president at the college who, from 1967 to 1986, helped guide major expansion on the campus.

-- Pete Mehas, alumnus and former football star who served four terms as Fresno County schools superintendent.

-- Sarah Reyes, alumna and former California Assembly member who also once worked as assistant to the chancellor at the State Center Community College District.

-- Kopi Sotiropulos, alumnus and television personality who co-hosts "Great Day" on KMPH (Channel 26.1).

-- Gary Soto, an author who developed his love for reading and writing as a student at City College.

-- Franz Weinschenk, who started teaching at City College in 1954 and continues today as an adjunct faculty member.

-- Charles "Tom" Wright, a retired instructor and former announcer for basketball and football who also founded the "New Wrinkles" show.

The 10 will be recognized at the Centennial Ball on Dec. 31, which launches the anniversary celebration.

The campus opened in September 1910 as the state's first community college.
