The southbound lanes on Clovis Avenue between Belmont Avenue and Kings Canyon Road in Fresno will be closed intermittently during the next two weeks for installation of a new water main.

Motorists should expect delays, city officials said.

Girl Scouts seek nominations

Girl Scouts of Central California South is seeking nominations to recognize Valley women who have distinguished themselves through service and leadership and as role models for girls.

A luncheon to honor the winners will be held next year. Nominees must live or work in Fresno, Madera, Kings or Tulare counties but do not have to be a current or former Girl Scout.

Tulare Co. volunteers wanted

An informational meeting on the Tulare County Sheriff's Department's Volunteers in Patrol program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the county Office of Education in Visalia, 2637 W. Burrel Ave.

Sheriff Bill Wittman is seeking more volunteers to help the department with traffic control, community outreach, transporting documents and office assistance. Volunteer applications are available at www.tularesheriff.info or at the sheriff's personnel office at 36004 Road 112, Visalia.

Green business practices recognized

Twelve Valley organizations and two individuals will be recognized Thursday by Mayor Ashley Swearengin for recycling and incorporating environmentally friendly business practices into their operations.

E&J Gallo Winery, Whole Foods Market at Fig Garden Village and the Fresno Chaffee Zoo will receive the Mayor's Zero Waste Award.

Geil Enterprises, City of Fresno Central Printing, Amtrak, Eye-Q, Grundfos Pumps, American Vintage Thrift, Kaiser Permanente, Richard Heath & Associates Inc. and Oriental Express Downtown will receive the Mayor's Business Recycling Award. Yvonne Encisco and Clayton Eha, both with Whole Foods, will receive the Mayor's Individual Recycling Award.

Mothers' retreat set

The Fresno County Office of Education's Migrant Education Program, Region IV, will host its first Regional Mothers' Retreat today at TorNinos Banquet Hall.

More than 120 migrant mothers from school districts throughout the region are expected to attend.

This year's theme is "Proyecto Gema -- Project Gem" and will include a lineup of speakers and workshops featuring topics that range from education to self-assertiveness and self-defense.

$36,200 will be given

Gill Ranch Storage and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. will present a $36,200 check to Westside Institute of Technology on Tuesday to help retrain more than 60 WIT students in the construction field. The presentation will begin at 1 p.m. at Mendota High School.

WIT, a project of West Hills Community College District and the Firebaugh-Las Deltas, Golden Plains and Mendota school districts, links individuals and employers through regional collaboration between career and technical education and business.
