A grant awarded to West Hills Community College District will provide educational and career services to 100 farmworkers or their family members per year for the next five years as part of a high school equivalency program.
Dr. Frank Gornick, the district's chancellor, said the grant came at an important time as unemployment in some of the 10 communities that will be served is more than 40%.
Aimed at helping migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their children obtain their GED and providing the support services they need to help them prepare for college or find employment, the grant will be paid in $475,000 installments over five years.
Services will be offered to residents of Avenal, Coalinga, Corcoran, Firebaugh, Huron, Laton, Lemoore, Mendota, Riverdale and San Joaquin, Gornick said.
