  To anyone who might have missed the 82nd annual Fresno Christmas Parade, you missed one of the most diverse eclectic parades ever held in Fresno -- everything from Raiders' supporters to very special Mexican horses and riders in elaborate costumes -- the crowd was delighted.

  Mayor Ashley Swearengin was stunning as the grand marshal, and whoever thought of having this fantastic parade, with numerous marching bands, stroll down the Fulton Mall was pure genius. Finally, the mall was put to good use.

  The Fresno Winterfest tree lighting and choir was a fitting tribute to the 82nd annual Fresno Christmas Parade. Thank you, Fresno, for an "only in Fresno" parade.

  El Dorado Park playground

  On Dec. 17, I had the opportunity to participate in the most amazing community project I have seen in my seven years on the Fresno City Council. It was the building of the KaBOOM playground at El Dorado Park.

  Early on that Saturday morning, some 250 community volunteers began assembling, digging, lifting, hammering and painting what was to become a new playground, in one of the most challenged neighborhoods in Fresno. It was done just seven hours later.

  I want to extend a huge thank you to KaBOOM, Wesley United Methodist Church, Boys and Girls Club and Fresno State Associated Students Inc. for their vision, drive and determination to get this project done. Also, thanks to Pacific Gas & Electric and the Fresno Regional Foundation for believing in and funding the project. And thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this project a reality.

  I saw a news article recently about Antarctica. There are two fissures somewhere just off the coast. Each fissure is heating the water to more than 700 degrees. Seems the fish and mollusks are doing quite well.

  Do you think the volcanoes heating up the water could have something to do with the ice melt around Antarctica? Or is it man-made global warming? Which cause would you pick? Which cause would environmentalists pick?

According to the latest Estimates and Rankings published by the National Education Association, the average salaries of K-12 instructional staff in California's public schools are the fourth highest in the U.S., trailing only New York, Massachusetts and Alaska.

  If you thought quality public education for children was the purpose of Proposition 98, you should have looked more carefully at precisely who was behind the initiative -- the California Teachers Association.
