Clovis West finished second at the first Nike Tournament of Champions, a 36-team volleyball tournament in Phoenix that drew some of the top teams from across the Western United States.
After winning their first seven matches of the tournament, the Golden Eagles fell 25-19, 26-24 to Desert Vista-Phoenix in the final Saturday.
Clovis West beat Southern California powers Bishop's-La Jolla (21-25, 26-24, 15-12) and Cathedral-San Diego (25-23, 19-25, 18-16) to reach the final. Golden Eagles setter Melody Mandelbaum was named to the all-tournament team.
It's the second straight prestigious tournament the defending section D-I champions have finished second. Clovis West lost to Archbishop Mitty-San Jose, the nation's top-ranked team according to an ESPN-produced poll, in the final of the Spikefest tournament in Milpitas on Sept. 5.
"It's really important for my team to see this level of competition," Golden Eagles coach Rhonda DeRuiter said. "Even though we returned a lot of players, we have a very untried lineup. About 75% of last year's offense is gone. We really needed some high levels of competition to let us know what we needed to work on. This team has responded to that and is really playing well."
