Kingsburg High's Tyler Bray can be mentioned alongside first-round NFL draft picks such as Vince Young, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Leinart and Matthew Stafford in at least one respect -- all were selected to participate at Elite 11, an annual competition for the nation's premier high school quarterbacks.

Bray, who will be a senior this year, is the second player from the Fresno area to be invited to the exclusive camp that will also feature 11 other top-rated high school quarterbacks from across the nation, including Nick Montana, son of former San Francisco 49ers star Joe Montana.

"It's great being recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation, especially coming out of a small town like Kingsburg," said Bray, who gave a nonbinding oral commitment to San Diego State this month.

"I'm just going to show them what I've got and represent the Central Valley, my town and my community."

Bray earned his spot in the Elite 11 camp, which runs July 20-23 at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, with a strong showing during a regional competition in June in Las Vegas. More than 1,000 quarterbacks participated at the various regional camps across the country.

A bio on the Elite 11 Web site says Bray is "a big-time sleeper out of the Golden State ... [and] a strong-armed pocket passer who draws favorable comparisons to former NFL standout Drew Bledsoe."

The 6-foot-6, 189-pounder is ranked the 31st-best overall prospect and the fifth-best quarterback, according to ESPNU's 150 watch list of the nation's top college football prospects.

Bray passed for 2,624 yards and 26 touchdowns to help the Vikings reach the Central Section Division IV final last season.

Kingsburg quarterbacks coach John Swenning said Bray has put in the work to rise to the elite level.

"Everything is just starting to come together," Swenning said. "Everything we've been working on and trying to drill into his head.

"The maturity level is catching up with him. He's got all the physical talents, and he's putting them all together."

Arkelon Hall of Edison High was the first Fresno area player to attend the camp, in 2004.

Trio bound for UC Davis

Three Fresno-area high school athletes are headed to UC Davis to run and compete in track and field: Clovis East's Michael Peterson, Buchanan's Carrington Mahr and Madera's Jesse Arellano.

Peterson will join brother Jonathan as a member of the cross country and track and field teams. Peterson was second in the pole vault at the state meet to help Clovis East's boys tie for the team title.

Mahr was a two-time state track and field meet qualifier in the high jump and triple jump for Buchanan. Arellano was a state-qualifier in cross country as well as the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in track and field for Madera.

Peterson was a first-team All-Bee Track and Field Team member. Mahr and Arellano were on the second-team.

Buchanan honored

Buchanan was named the Central Section's top school in Cal-Hi Sports' year-end awards.Selections are based on how schools fared in football, boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball, and in other sports in which there are CIF state/regional championships.

Archbishop Mitty-San Jose was the state School of the Year.
