  At the State of Downtown Breakfast on Tuesday, where Mayor Ashley Swearengin was the featured speaker, I was reminded of a letter that 18 past presidents of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce wrote in support of her mayoral candidacy. We wrote: "Ashley is the candidate who has the vision, and more importantly, proven leadership skills to continue to move Fresno and the region forward."

  Mayor Swearengin showed in her speech that she has a clear vision for Fresno with the revitalization of downtown and the Fulton Mall as the central objective. She made it clear that she is not afraid to confront the status quo. She showed us that she is willing to put her name on the line when she believes she is doing the right thing.

  She has clearly demonstrated that she knows how to bring people together to accomplish her goals. She is also able to do all of these things with grace, style, and humor. These are all attributes of a great leader, and we are fortunate to have her and her team in City Hall.

  Santa came early

  When our daughter was 3, I wrapped some of her presents early and placed them under the tree while she was sleeping. The next morning, I was in the kitchen when she woke up.

  The next thing I hear is paper ripping in the family room. I went to investigate, and she excitedly exclaimed, "Santa came early!"

  Thinking quickly, I reminded her that we had to wait until Daddy got home before she could open any more presents. Luckily, she'd forgotten by the time Daddy was home, and I was able to put them away until it was time for Santa to come.
