Central High sophomore Brendan Bigelow, in a shocking season conclusion a year after he established state identity by placing second in the 200, scratched from the 400 at the CIF State Track and Field Championships that began Friday at Buchanan's Veterans Memorial Stadium.
It was the only event he qualified for after pulling up in the 100 at the Central Section finals two weeks ago, and then scratching from the 200 in the same meet while complaining of a groin pull.
He already had won the 400, a relatively new event for him, but his race of the future, according to Grizzlies coach Vince Labowsky.
But his season best of 48.04 while taking that gold was a far shot from this meet's favorite, La Sierra-Carmichael's Reggie Wyatt (46.38).
And that apparently discouraged Bigelow from running in his backyard at the state meet.
"He wasn't confident in running it," Labowsky said. "But when he commits to the 200 and 400, he'll be a state champion in both."
Tiger signs with Bulldogs
Edison High's Breeauna Thompson, competing here in the 400 and 1,600 relays, signed with Fresno State this week.
In section rankings, she finished the season No. 8 in the 100 (12.58), No. 6 in the 200 (25.48) and No. 4 in the 400 (57.08). And the Tigers' 400 relay (47.46) is No. 9 all time in the section, and their 1,600 quartet (3:50.76) is No. 3.
Friday, she anchored the 400 relay that timed 47.51 -- tied for ninth all time in the section -- but failed to qualify for today's finals.
Knights star plans to go to Rice
Bullard junior Mariah Riddlesprigger, who qualified here in the 100 and on the Knights' 400 relay, has made an oral commitment to play volleyball as an outside hitter at Rice.
Appearing in the state meet for the third straight year, she got off to a blistering start, running a quick second leg in the 400 relay as the Knights timed 46.88 -- No. 3 in section history. They qualified eighth for today's finals.
Section owns 2 longtime marks
Two section athletes hold state meet and California marks in their respective events.
Tulare's James Stallworth set a state and meet record in the long jump in 1989 with a leap of 26-04.75. The second-best mark in state history belongs to Edison's Randy Williams, who jumped 26-03.75 in 1971.
Clovis' Latrese Johnson set the state record in the high jump with a mark of 6-2.75 in 1985, the same year she set the state meet record with a jump of 6-0.
Other names that decorate the records page include former Olympians such as Marion Jones and Allyson Felix
Bears' Albertson closes strong
Buchanan's C.J. Albertson ran the second fastest time ever by a Central Section freshman while placing 19th in the boys 1,600 preliminaries in 4:19.28.
