He’s fast, physical and has moves that can almost juke defenders out of their cleats.

Add to that a powerful shot and the ability to step up and lead a team and that’s why Bullard High senior Paul Islas is the Fresno Bee’s Boys Soccer Player of the Year for the second straight season.

A four-year starter at forward and midfielder, Islas was named Bullard’s Most Valuable Player this season. He also was MVP of the County/Metro Athletic Conference, which Bullard won with a 9-0-1 record. Islas was a team captain this season and led the Knights with 20 goals; he scored 92 during his career.

Bullard earned the top seed in the Central Section Division I playoffs, and Islas scored the equalizing goal as Bullard beat No. 2 Central 2-1 in the final.

In the opening round of the CIF Southern California Division I Regional, Islas blasted the winner with 12 seconds left in Bullard’s 2-1 win over Valencia. He also scored the first goal in Bullard’s 3-1 victory over Torrey Pines in the SoCal semifinal. Bullard lost 2-0 to No. 5 El Camino Real-Woodland Hills in the SoCal championship to finish the season 23-4-2.

“Without a doubt Paul is the most gifted player in the Valley; his technical skills are awesome,” Bullard coach Igal Francis said. “Paul has the ability to change the outcome of a game in the blink of an eye. He can strike the ball equally well with both feet and is a very strong athlete.”

Islas has signed a letter of intent to play at Cal Poly next year.

Said Memorial coach Rick Martinez: “He is a gifted player. He has all the tools.”
