Vitals: Clovis West

He’s qualified because: Directed the Golden Eagles to a 25-5 season capped by a 9-5 victory over three-time defending champion Buchanan for the Division I championship. Also led Clovis West to a second-place finish at the St. Francis Invitational, a fourth-place finish at the NorCal Championships and a co-Tri-River Athletic Conference title.

Defining moment: After coming up short against rival Buchanan in the Central Section Division I final the past three seasons and losing to the Bears in their pool in the powerhouse programs' first meeting this season, Clovis West finally got over the hump in the second-half of Tri-River Athletic Conference play. The Golden Eagles' 10-4 victory Oct. 29 set the stage for their run through the D-I playoffs. “For us to beat them the way we did truly gave the girls confidence going into the postseason of what they were capable of,” Torosian said.

Career highlights: Former Clovis High water polo standout is in his fourth season as the Golden Eagles coach. Torosian’s teams are 95-34 since he took over in 2005, following one season as an assistant. Got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at the University of Redlands between 2002-2004. Had been 0-6 in section finals — 0-3 as both a player and coach — before this season.

The word: “The girls did a lot of stuff in the summer and winter. This group believed in working out in the offseason. I told them if they stuck with the game plan, they’d be a special team, and they were.” — Torosian

Opposing take: “Scott’s done a really good job and he has a great crew to work with. They were really stacked this year. Some of their girls who were good, but not great, really did a great job.” — Buchanan coach Mark Greenwood

Scott Torosian put his stamp on a storied program he once was a rival of.

Torosian, a Clovis High graduate, directed the first group of girls to play four seasons under his system at Clovis West to the Central Section Division I championship — his first as Golden Eagles coach and the program’s ninth overall. He is The Bee’s Coach of the Year in girls water polo.

Torosian knew he had the ingredients to bring the D-I title back to Clovis West after a three-year run by rival Buchanan. He had a roster stacked with 10 seniors, including talented goalie Kylee Tomasetti, and one of the section’s best water polo talents in junior Tristin Baxter.

After losing to Buchanan in last year’s final, the Golden Eagles dedicated themselves to a title-winning season in 2008, taking steps toward that goal by placing second at the St. Francis Invitational and fourth at the NorCal Championships before tying the Bears for the Tri-River Athletic Conference crown.

“This group bought into the system we run and everything we put out there for them,” Torosian said. “They took it and ran with it. To bring the title back to Clovis West was special.”
