Golf is measured by its majors, the tournaments that determine champions at any level. Shaylee Yano did not dominate the major events in the high school girls golf season. No one did.
But the Kingsburg High senior, who signed to play at Fresno State in the fall, was a model of consistency in the big events, producing a solid résumé that earned her Bee Player of the Year honors.
Playing against strong fields that included other members of The Bees all-star team, Yano finished no lower than third among her South Valley peers in the falls four major events:
Second at the Central Area meet with a 77 at Dinuba Ridge Creek, just one stroke behind Vikings teammate Megan Cochrans 76. Medalist at the Central Section team tournament with a 72 at Riverbend. Tied for third best among North- and Central-area players (fifth overall) at the Central Section individual event with a 77 at RiverLakes Ranch in Bakersfield. Tied for second among Valley golfers at the Southern California Regional with an 81 on a day when only one Central Section golfer broke 80. Yano won the Central Sequoia League title with a 76 at Ridge Creek and averaged 76 .6 in the postseason down from 82.4 in 2007. Shaylee was great last year as a junior, but as a senior she truly had a breakthrough year, Kingsburg coach Bill Jensen said. It is important to note that she is able to perform at this high level while also playing another sport [point guard on the basketball team] and singing in the jazz choir. I have no doubt that when she concentrates solely on golf, she will continue to improve and succeed at Fresno State.
