Vitals: Roosevelt, junior

Need to know: He’s not to be confused with Buchanan’s Jonathan Sanchez, though there’s good reason by name and talent.

He ran a Roosevelt record 15:43 to place 17th in the state’s D-III race.

Then he became a national intermediate champion in AAU Junior Olympic competition in Decatur, Ala. The word: “Johnny’s an achiever. He wanted to be [North Yosemite League] champ, and he was. He wanted to be the first Roosevelt runner to break 16 minutes at Woodward, and he did. And he wanted to finish in the top 10 at the state meet. At 17th, at first that appeared to be kind of a disappointment. But at 15:43, last year he would have placed fifth. It was just a very, very fast state meet this year. He’s a harder worker and an excellent student; he had a 3.8 GPA this semester. He’s a student of cross country. He knows past Roosevelt runners, what they ran and what he needs to run to beat them. And he could tell you the 16 guys who finished ahead of him in the state. He knows where he stands, and he’s already looking forward to next year.” Roosevelt coach Bruce Wade said.
