Vitals: Redwood, sophomore

Need to know: The athlete who began running cross country as a freshman to get in soccer shape followed his 2007 section D-III title by winning D-II (15:56).

He finished 19th in the state (15:31).

The word: “As with many kids entering high school fixated on many other sports, cross country was not in Justin’s cross hairs as a freshman. He was running cross country mainly as an accident, proded by his parents to get ready for soccer. Then he realized how well he could run, and now he’s much more focused on it. He’s only running [without playing soccer], and that changes everything — training routine, the offseason, and the mind-set. He has a lot more to grow; greater things are coming up. If you look at it, he’s still a very young runner; he’s only been doing this for 24 months. I’m really looking forward to his junior year.” Redwood coach Chris Bouck said.
