Vitals: Buchanan, senior

Need to know: A just-miss 2007 Bee All-Star first-teamer, he removed any doubt this year by placing second at 15 minutes, 26 seconds over Woodward Park’s 3.1-mile course in the Central Section Division I race.

He had an eighth-place finish in the state at 15:18 — 40 seconds faster than his 2007 state time. The word: “I didn’t think he had a 15:18 in him. To run that fast with that pressure, that’s just phenomenal. He dug down so much and gave everything he had. That was one of the finest races I’ve ever had a chance to see. He’s one of the most special kids I’ve ever coached in terms of being focused, determined and committed.” Buchanan coach Marty Simpson said.
