Artists you should know: Aspen Hollow

April 10, 2008

Aspen Hollow is the point where acoustic folk, the indie rock of The Shins and the inventiveness of Radiohead intersect.

This Fresno-based folky, indie, acoustic band (which, it's worth noting, puts on a captivating live show) is headlining at 8 p.m. today at Full Circle Brewing Co., 620 F St.

We talked to singer/songwriter Kevin Rees about Aspen Hollow's beginnings, its influences and its future.

What's the CliffsNotes version of the Aspen Hollow story? The project started out as a solo act, but the songs began to grow and needed more than just guitar and vocals. Piece by piece, members were added, starting with a drummer and ending with an electric guitarist.

If you were explaining the band to someone who had never heard it, how would you describe your sound? It's always been tough to put a finger directly on our sound, but I would say indie/folk/rock and that we are a vocally driven melodic band

Who are your influences musically? Radiohead, The Shins and Coldplay.

What inspires you as a songwriter? Everyday life situations, stories of simpler times, past and present emotional experiences.

I hear a CD is in the works. What can you tell us about it, and when can people expect it? A CD is in the works. The recording is going very well. This album is going to be a perfect representation of the music we create. We are nearing the final stages in the studio and hope to have a finished product sometime in May.

Give people your best sales pitch for your show tonight. Aspen Hollow has been playing in Fresno for more than a year now. The show tonight is going to be an intimate night with us as a band. We will be playing a huge variety of music from our set list. This will be an excellent night for fans who have been with us from the beginning, as well as new listeners, to hear everything we have to offer.

Rheanna Downey from San Diego will also be performing. She is one of our favorite songwriters and a big treat for Fresno.
