  Fresno Exchange Club honors 'Top Cops'

  Fresno's "Top Cops" were honored by the Exchange Club of Fresno in a luncheon ceremony at the Ramada Inn on Thursday.

  The Exchange Club honored one Top Cop from each of three area law enforcement agencies. The winners are California Highway Patrol Officer Jack Graham, Fresno Police detective Dustin Bruzee and Fresno County Sheriff's Deputy Isidro Rueles.

  A man named by Fresno police as one of the city's top five auto thieves remains in jail on assault with a deadly weapon charges after a Thursday night stabbing in the Tower District.

  Victor Portillo, 29, is accused of stabbing another man in the chest at Home and Van Ness Avenues. The victim was slashed in the chest. He is expected to recover.

  In February, Portillo was named to the top five list. Police said then that Portillo had six outstanding warrants and was arrested six times in 2012 on auto theft charges.

  There have been articles in The Bee about which school districts are best in educating our students. Sanger and Clovis were the top winners in the Central California Science Fair. Sanger had 15 winners, Clovis 10 and Fresno Unified three. The three from Fresno attend charter schools. Not one student won from Fresno Unified's district schools.

  Another article outlines how the districts are graduating students of color. Of six districts analyzed, Clovis and Sanger were the top two and Fresno Unified was at the bottom with a D+ grade.

  As a taxpayer, I have to ask, why is Fresno Unified always in the bottom rankings even though their annual budget is significantly higher than the other districts? Fresno Unified gets annual revenue per student of $8,870, an average $1,800 higher than Sanger, Madera, Central and Visalia. Clovis' success can be explained by higher funds and higher family income, but what about Sanger which receives $1,938 less than Fresno?

  I would like to see a Space Needle modeled like the one in Seattle. This would be an incredible magnet to downtown Fresno. At 500-plus feet, it would provide a great vantage point to see the Valley and the mountains. Also similar to Seattle's: a restaurant at the top, with stores, shops and nightclubs at the base, would also be very cool.
