BEVERLY HILLS -- By my count, this is the 37th Television Critics Association tour I have attended over the past 19 years. It would have been 38, but that pesky writers' strike meant the cancellation of the January trek by critics to Southern California. Unless there is a strike, the event is held twice a year. Each July, TV critics from across the country get the chance to preview the fall season, which traditionally begins in September.

The second ratings book since the ousting of Bud Elliott in December at KSEE, Channel 24, shows a sharp decline in viewers for the local NBC affiliate's news programs. That's according to A.C. Nielsen, a leading monitor of viewing habits. The company has just released the television ratings for May.

Fresno television viewers have done a pretty good job getting ready for the big analog-to-digital conversion in February. For those with cable or satellite, there's nothing they have to do. But everyone else -- and that's about half of all local viewers -- needs to be prepared.
