Enter the Warzone, struggling to kick a gallon-a-day water habit.
-- Seven long years have passed since either of the Bay Area's NFL teams reached the playoffs, and this one didn't portend any different.
Lo and behold, the wonders of parity. The surprising San Francisco 49ers are 2-0 heading into today's tilt with Brett Favre's Minnesota Vikings. And the Oakland Raiders (who should be 2-0) will be no worse than tied for the AFC West lead if they can tame the Denver Broncos.
It's far too early to declare a full-on renaissance, but Michelangelo is on retainer.
-- Sorry, Fresno State fans. There's no prize for being the best 1-3 team in the country. Only frustration.
-- We told you Boise State wouldn't even get a slap on the wrist for that flagrant hit on Ryan Colburn.
So what if Winston Venable's shoulder pads brushed Colburn before his helmet struck like a missile? It was still the most blatant display of spearing since "Gladiator."
-- Nevada's Chris Ault sure is quick to call out his players in public. Time for some accountability, coach.
The winless Wolf Pack was so poorly prepared for the season opener against Notre Dame, even one of Gerry Faust's teams would've creamed them.
-- Well, we finally put the kibosh on the San Francisco Giants.
Now it's time to find out whether Buster Posey is ready or needs more seasoning. (And we bet Posey would've thrown out Derrek Lee at second base the other night.)
-- Exhibit A why giving $2.1 million to a 16-year-old is always fraught with risk: Angel Villalona.
-- With no one paying attention, the Oakland A's went 34-25 in their first 59 games since the Matt Holliday trade. And they did it scoring 5.3 runs per game. Astonishing.
-- Joe Colmenero, the 48-year-old who plays on the Fresno City soccer team with his 19-year-old son, is our new hero.
No way we could swear off Rocky Road ice cream and pizza.
-- Someone get Ron Artest a globe. Just so Ron knows he's on planet Earth.
-- For no particular reason: Steve Soderstrom
-- As someone who enjoys paddling a kayak, both for exercise and fishing, we can't wait for the restored San Joaquin Canal ... er, River.
But salmon runs? Please. The section below Friant Dam is already teeming with trout from the nearby hatchery -- even we've caught nice fish there -- and as you move downstream it becomes a haven for bass, crappie and catfish.
Why destroy a thriving warm-water fishery just to spend millions trying to implement a cold-water one? For a few dozen salmon (that no one will be allowed to catch), it doesn't make sense.
