Vitals: Clovis East, senior, pole vault
He’s qualified because: Placed first in the Central Section (15-4) and second in the state (15-11) in the pole vault.
His best of 16-0 is No. 6 all time in the section – only the eighth vaulter in section history to clear 16 feet.
He said it: “He started from square one [as a freshman] with absolutely no talent and having been a distance runner to boot. As he matured and got stronger, believed in his [event] coach, A.J. Blackburn, worked his tail off in the field and the weight room, he developed into an excellent pole vaulter. He even bought his own pole with his allowance money. For him to be a Valley champion and finish second in the state is mind blowing to me. That’s a great success story.” — Timberwolves coach Jim Farmer.
